Welcome to Through 50!

This is my personal blog, where I shove in all kinds of things that I'm doing post 50. It may not all be new, but since I've never written about it, it just as well be to me.

I hope you find my take on any number of things interesting!

Virtual Jeff

All it takes is a phone, a reasonable signal, a relatively quiet place, and a conference call appointment.

Wow, I've really really had some fun with this,... Being anywhere and everywhere and dialing into a conference call.   Where's Jeff?  It doesn't matter, he is on the phone, he's on the call, and where he's at and why is immaterial.

Like when I was at the beach in January.

I was at the Dill's condo, and had to be on a series of calls for work, on this occasion it's our daily Scrum standup, a time-boxed 15 minute go around the room, "How's it Going?".   The trick here was that I didn't want to wake the slumbering heads in the condo at 8:15 am.   I went down stairs, and found a lawn chair on a deck, right beside the beach.  Nope, too noisy, call-ins would be able to hear the ocean waves.  I moved to a courtyard, nope, too noisy, the lawn care folks were blowing and mowing.   Hmmm,... ah a little nook between, a hallway of sorts, still outside, but reasonably quiet.  Success, 15 minute call, it's just like Jeff is there!

Like when I was interviewing this past November.

I had a series of phone interviews trying to land a Dir. of Eng. position.   For HP, I had had the phone screen, flown to Austin for the face to face, and had two conference calls with folks in Sunnyvale.  Last interview, a second phone interview with the EVP that would be my bosses boss.  I had just visited someone in Crestwood Hospital, and needed to get to that special place to be Virtual Jeff.   Where?  Yes, I'll do this interview from the airport road Starbucks parking lot.  No mowers, no coffee beans being whished with steam, just me in the car with the iPhone and the earbuds.  The interview started with the EVP saying hi John.  No sir, I'm Jeff.  Oh, ok, sorry.   Thirty-minutes later, that interview was done, and guess what, I got the offer!!!!

Like this past Thursday!!!!

I had been working on an NPI transformation to Agile/Scrum presentation for 2 months, and it was time to deliver it to my bosses bosses boss, the division VP, over a conference call.   Wait a minute.  We've got a company gathering in Columbus, a BBQ right before that call, so I can't do Webex!   Hmmm..  Yes.  I can print out the powerpoint slides and steal away to a quiet place during the picnic.   Yep, the grilles were burning, and I fetched a hotdog off the grill, no bread, and ate in on the walk back to my "office", the Z3.  I shut the door, dialed up the call bridge #, and co-presented a 45 minute presentation.  Little did I know the bossses bosses bosses boss was there, the EVP that reports directly the CEO of the 8,000 employee company.  Yes, Virtual Jeff delivers.   The presentation went great, the EVP wrapped up the call, stating "let's do this", and the call ended.    When I got back to the picnic, I got, "where have you been?, we're ready for frisbee and corn hole!".  I said sure, just had to take that call!

Virtual Jeff!   Where will he be next?  In the airport, by the beach, at the picnic, at Starbucks?

Stay Tuned!

On Fire!

Fire is the key.

Fire is passion a burning within.   If we keep the fire burning, then we have the energy to pursue our interests passionately.

My Fire.

I have a Fire for change.  The world is changing constantly whether I like it or not.  It's in a constant state of renewal.  I figure I might as well change with it, or become a museum piece.

The things that don't change are the principles.  But too many times, our principles are/were just grounded in someone else's interpretation of the world and their take on principles.   Go back to your principles, go to their source.   God-principles are timeless and the source.  Don't change principles but retest your implementation of them.

Be open to change!

I have a Fire for new, for creation, for discovery, for startups.   I have always been drawn to startups, and new business initiatives for this reason.   A startup says let's go compete with the big guys, let's change the game, let's solve a problem in a new way, let's build a company that puts principles first.

More to come on this, but,...

What is your Fire?

God Speaks

I mentioned in my last post that I had been looking for some message, something to share at the events of Katie's wedding.   God spoke.   He provided me with some insight and a song, "God Can You Hear Me?" from Tate.   See lyrics below.   This is a song that I already owned, but I had forgotten its message.

Just like in the movie The Matrix, when Trinity approaches Neo at the beginning of the movie, she asked, You Know the Question, he replies "What is the Matrix?".    She goes on to say it's the question that drives us.

It is the question that drives us!  The question is, "God can you hear me? "

It is the question that we all have.  It is basic, and real, and we wonder.  God are you really there?  Can you show me You?

This weekend God spoke to me.

He said I am here, I know you have been looking for me.   He said I will reveal myself.

He revealed his plan for my family throughout a wonderful wedding weekend.  He revealed his plan for David, and Katie.   He made his plans for them and for their entire family clear and evident.

Hearing God speaks does have a pre-requisite, we have to lay aside what we think, what we think we know.  We have to lay down our will, our pride, and listen.

I think sometimes routine causes us to not listen, and not to seek.   Through our comfortable ways of approaching life, we believe we have it figured out and then we become disenchanted with Him, and we stop listening for Him.   When our lives are disrupted we have no choice but to listen.   Even in serious disruption we still have a choice, we can choose to not listen.

God Spoke.

This weekend, the weekend of my daughter's wedding, God spoke through conversations and acts of selflessness and joy.   This weekend was not a disruption, rather a revelation.  God spoke through his wisdom of a plan that had been in the works for  at least 23 years, perhaps longer.   God revealed himself, again, to me and to my friends.  God revealed himself and spoke to my entire family!

I am listening!

God Can You Hear Me, by Tait

I've been here before
It's hard to ignore
I'm so used to fighting
The same old wars

Oh what do you see when your looking at me
Have I taken You for granted
I can't afford this pain anymore
Won't You help me understand it

God can You hear me
I need You here tonight
I'm tired of pretending that everything's alright
And I know, I know that You hold tomorrow
But I need You here tonight

I want to feel
I need something real
I want to go closer to You
I lay down my will

Oh this human disease it's killing me
Tell me have I been left stranded
I can't ignore this pain anymore
Won't You help me understand it

Say won't You say that
You'll carry me
Carry me through the storm
Stay
Won't You stay
Till the morning comes
Morning comes
Just stay

We May Never Pass This Way Again

The song referenced above just popped into my head.  It's a song by Seals and Crofts from the 70s.   It reminds me of just how much I was into music in the 70s.  My brother was also big into the music, and when he wasn't around I would slip into his vinyl album inventory and spin up an album, being careful not to scratch it.

Maybe one of the reasons this popped into my head was the two weddings I attended yesterday.  Particularly, I vividly remember Katie's childhood neighbor Keri when her and Katie would play on our front porch swing.  We have a photo of that moment.  Yesterday I watched Keri's dad Mike give her away.   An awesome moment, and maybe why the song is my head.

My daughter give away moment is now less than a week away.   Maybe that's another reason why this song popped in my head.  This time, I didn't go spin it up on the turntable, but simply pulled it down with iTunes for a $1.29.   Great song for a great time, the 70s, and I'm certainly not passing that way again, those days are long gone.

This week, I'm looking for a new song to mark this moment in time for me, and so this post will be continued 1 week later, after the wedding, and after the song.   Let's see where this goes!

OK, yesterday I gave my daughter away, not away but to David in marriage!   The only reason I didn't fall to pieces before I stepped out in that aisle was that I was so happy and was surrounded by so many that were happy for me.  I just focused on that instead of what was really going on, that my only daughter was getting married.

Now for the song.   The song is "God Can You Hear Me?", by Tait.   I was riding around Thursday, had my iPhone in music shuffle mode, and that song came up.   It was clear to me that this would be the centerpiece of what I wanted to say at the rehearsal dinner party Friday night.   God had spoken again.  He had provided me with the source of what needed to be said Friday.  I needed to, and I say this humbly, speak for God to remind us all that God had answered not just prayers, but had answered this deep yearning, this deep question that we are all given, "God Can You Hear Me?"   The answer was a resounding YES, I hear you!

Seinfeld: Do the Opposite?

You can check out the Seinfeld script below, but the idea is that if everything I'm doing or decision I make turns out wrong, then perhaps I should try doing exactly the opposite of what I would normally do.

I heard a CEO at a trade show reference this same episode and say that he had incorporated this into his thinking when trying to resolve a problem or dilemma.

As a 50er, this is absolutely fun to experiment with!

For George, the opposite thinking is to be honest, because normally he lies about himself when trying to meet a woman.   He has to lie because he's bald, is jobless, and lives with his parents!

Today, I'm going to play the opposite game!

In this episode of Seinfeld, George does the opposite.

( A blonde looks at George )
Elaine : Ah, George, you know, that woman just looked at you.
George : So what? What am I supposed to do?
Elaine : Go talk to her.
George : Elaine, bald men, with no jobs, and no money, who live with their parents, don't approach strange women.
Jerry : Well here's your chance to try the opposite. Instead of tuna salad and being intimidated by women, chicken salad and going right up to them.
George : Yeah, I should do the opposite, I should.
Jerry : If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.
George : Yes, I will do the opposite. I used to sit here and do nothing, and regret it for the rest of the day, so now I will do the opposite, and I will do
something!
( He goes over to the woman )
George : Excuse me, I couldn't help but notice that you were looking in my direction.
Victoria : Oh, yes I was, you just ordered the same exact lunch as me.
( G takes a deep breath )
George : My name is George. I'm unemployed and I live with my parents.
Victoria : I'm Victoria. Hi.

The Heart of the Matter

This post is related to my working through re-invention and re-creation.

At 40 we said, "Is this all there is?".  The answer was no, but it felt like it.

At 50, the question is, "Do you want to continue to play the same games, and have the same thoughts, and do the same things, and eat the same food that you did the prior 10 years?".   If the answer is yes, then read no further.

If no, then consider the "Heart of the Matter".  How do I break out and do and think something different?  Live differently?

I suppose the answer is different for all of us, but I was recently inspired by Michael Gerber, of E-Myth.  Here's an excerpt, and a little license with "E-Myth Mastery", and from the chapter, "the Heart of the Matter".

"No life" is to live life as we have always lived it.  Life, or heaven on earth, is to break free of our long-standing patterns.  It takes an enormous amount of energy, passion, determination and will to even see the patterns, let alone break free from them.

Some things are life, and they should remain the same.   However, for the rest, I know the patterns, or "my normal take" on fill in the blank.  So what to do now?

That's up to you, but for me, I'm doing a lot of experimentation.  I remain true to God principles, but I'm even testing those to see if those are from God, or from someone else.

Identify the patterns, then decide how much work you want to do to change that pattern!  Change a pattern, change you.

Don't Lay Down!

As I've moved through the 40s to 50, there is a an urge to minimize risk, stay low, do nothing, "lay down".

It's like a pull of gravity almost, keeping you down, a feeling that it is time to slow down.

I have learned that physically, we have to listen to our body when it says "I'm not as young as I used to be!".   But emotionally, should we listen?

A couple of months ago, I booked a ticket to see Brooke Fraser in concert in Cleveland OH.   Since I'm working in Columbus, and since it was a Monday night, this meant that I was going to need to leave work early to drive to Cleveland from Columbus, and that I was going to be getting in very late, past 1PM.   When I booked the ticket, I didn't concern myself with these logistics issues, I just wanted to got to a concert!   However, when it was time to make the drive, and when I thought about how late I was going to be getting in, I seriously thought about forgetting the whole thing, and just not going.  Reason?  It was going to be too much trouble.

I'm really glad I pushed through the urge to "lay down".   Yes, I could have car trouble along the way, and if I had, I'm pretty certain I would have regretted going.   But I didn't have car trouble, it was a bright sunny day, and since I have a convertible, that meant top down!   The concert was a blast, and I'm absolutely glad I went.

Resist the emotional gravity that seems to come with getting older.  Keep emotionally in shape by continuing to push through and out of the comfort of doing nothing, and staying home, and laying down!

Travel Zombies

Since I've been getting on an airplane most every weekend for the past 6 months or so, and I've become keenly aware of the "Travel Zombie" phenomenon.

The Zombie phenomenon comes from the fact that it is work to always be up and positive and smiling.  Around our family and friends, we want to project the good life.  Even if we are not having to project the good life, it still takes work to always have an appearance of positive and happy, even if we are.

When folks are on travel, they are boarding planes, and wandering through airports with the notion that they will not see anyone they know.   And that's typically the case.  In the Atlanta, or Memphis or Detroit airports, I rarely see anyone I know.   Accordingly, since you are not being seen by people you know, you turn off the smile projector, and the talk machine, and zone out.   The face becomes expressionless like that of a Zombie - you become the walking dead!

I'd have to say that for frequent travelers, it takes work to not be a Travel Zombie.

As I've been wondering through the airports, and sitting at gates, I've noted the "Zombie look", is very common.  Unless a traveler is traveling with people they know, you see expressionless faces and zombie stares like "nobody is home".

Certainly, many times, I am a Traveling Zombie.  I get tired of moving my body between Huntsville and Columbus, and so when I get to the airport, I turn off the switch, and yes, I become a Traveling Zombie.

However, recently, I've had this thought.  How about if all travelers were aware of this phenomenon and decided to leave the light switch on?  Instead of sitting on the plane, not wanting to talk or be bothered, everyone would become aware of the folks beside them, and aware of all the hundreds of people they pass in the halls of Concourse B?   What what that look like?

The Atlanta airport would probably turn into a dynamic market and interaction place where new friends were made, were new businesses were launched, where people helped other people.

Could that happen?

I'm going to experiment a bit, with leaving my light switch on for the next several weeks, just to see what happens.   Hopefully I won't get punched!

Do you zone out when you travel too?

Where Were You When You Heard OBL was Dead?

I was sitting on an airplane.   I had just landed in Columbus on a Nashville to Columbus flight.

The pilot came on, and mentioned it, the whole plane cheered!

I had just prior seen a post on twitter from one of my Huntsville friends.

It was true, Osama Bin Laden, OBL was dead!

For a 50 year old, the relevance of OBL being dead is that I clearly remember where I was at at 9:00 am Central on Sept 11, 2001.  I was at work, at Nokia in Huntsville.  Someone had a TV there, and we watched in horror.

I remember asking some of the leaders there if I could pull everyone together for a prayer.   We prayed.

So on closure, almost 10 years later, the mastermind, or one of them, was/is dead.

A pretty significant event for us 50ers.

Servant Minded - More Community Focused

Although I suppose I've always had a servant heart, many times I've shied away from being involved in my community.  At least this morning, I got a chance to help our storm ravaged North Alabama tornado victims.    This felt really really good.  Other folks were on the chainsaw with many of us hauling the debris.   This is putting tornado destruction to good use - changing me!

New Music

I love music.

I don't want to change that, but I want to change my music.

Anymore, I really am working to not always play my old 70s and 80s music.  I'm looking for something new.

I've found it, Brooke Fraser.

This coming Monday, I'm driving from Columbus OH to Cleveland to see her in concert!

The 50 year old in me says that's a lot of trouble.  2 hour drive up, 2 hour drive back.

However, that's old thinking.   Young thinking says just do it.

I've got her new album, Flags.  I love it.  So, Brooke and Cleveland, coming your way Monday.

Also, I'm really really loving the new Switchfoot, album, Hello Hurricane.  This album is awesome!

New Music means new thoughts, new thinking, something different!
